What really happens when a Florida
suburb sets out to create an urban heart of town, from
scratch?
On the day before CNU Florida convenes
its annual Statewide Meeting in Winter Park, the chapter
will present an educational session in nearby Winter
Springs. Several years ago, the City of Winter Springs
embarked on developing its own brand-new downtown. With
several phases complete and much more breaking ground,
it’s time to take stock of what’s happened
so far— both good and not-so-good— and to
compare this case study with the recent experiences
in peer communities. Speakers will include leading practitioners
like Placemaking author Charles Bohl, engineer Rick
Hall, and planner Victor Dover, as well as City Manager
Ron McLemore. This promises to be a frank, pragmatic,
Florida-focused discussion that will challenge us to
question the best ways to design, finance and manage
emerging Main Streets and their environs. The workshop
will include basic how-to information both specific
to Winter Springs and transferable to other communities.
The Winter Springs City Commission
is opening up this unique session to peers and colleagues
from around the state.
