Program
Schedule | New Urbanism 101
The first CNU Florida Statewide Meeting will be held at Rollins College
in downtown Winter Park on the 13th and 14th of January 2005.
As a prelude, the Chapter will also offer an “New Urbanism
101” at
the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College Wednesday, January 12th.
The Statewide Meeting seeks to bridge the gap between the annual
CNU national Congress and the regional group gatherings that have
begun to occur regularly throughout Florida. The Meeting is an opportunity
for CNU members from around the state to come together to debate issues
of regional or statewide concern and to learn about the latest ideas,
findings and projects.
A primary theme of this year’s Meeting is Nolen Rediscovered,
as a backdrop to the discussion we’ll examine the work of pioneering
American town planner John Nolen, its historical importance to Florida,
and its relevance to today’s planning and development. The Chapter
plans to publish a Nolen’s Florida booklet as a handout for
the event. In addition, there will be two case studies presented and
discussed, one addressing successful downtown redevelopment, and the
other addressing brownfield development in the close-in suburbs.
A highlight of the event will be Thursday evening, which is slated
to include a reception and a presentation by the internationally renowned
historian of art, architecture and urbanism, Vincent Scully, Professor
Emeritus of Art History at Yale University.
We look forward to seeing everyone in Winter Park on 13-14 January
2005.
